AMBROSINI CALLS FOR CALM

Ambrosini - wants team to gel.

AC Milan defensive midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has asked fans to be patient as the team try to gel before the new Serie A season kicks off at the end of the month.

The Rossoneri were on the end of a 5-0 drubbing by Chelsea in a friendly last week and lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Saturday, although they have been shorn of a number of key players.

The forward line in particular has been hit hard by injuries with Marco Borriello, Kaka and Pippo Inzaghi all sidelined while Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato are away on Olympic duty with Brazil.

"We have had very little time to train together and this is a significant handicap for the team," said Ambrosini.

"At the moment we are basically missing an entire section of the side. However, the quality in this squad is so high that soon we will entertain the fans."

With Alessandro Nesta and Kakha Kaladze also missing from the defence, Ambrosini may be deployed in the back line at the start of the season.

"Adriano Galliani (vice president) and Carlo Ancelotti (coach) explained the situation to me. In an emergency like this, I have the characteristics to play in defence and I declared my availability to play there," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If the team is in trouble, you must not hold back.

"I was curious at the talk over my position, as it can be gratifying to know you are considered important in a number of different roles. However, I remain what I am - a midfielder."
