It Was 42 Footballing Years Ago Today...
July 15, 1966: Goodison Park played host to probably the greatest match of the World Cup as a Brazil side shorn of the injured Pele lost 3-1 to Hungary, with referee Ken Dagnall coming under criticism for allowing the eastern European side to bully the Brazilians. There were 52,000 packed into Goodison to witness a cracking match, while 40,000 watched Uruguay beat France at White City, 32,000 were at Hillsborough to watch Spain triumph over Switzerland and a hardy 13.792 turned out in Middlesbrough to see Chile and North Korea play out a 1-1 draw.
July 15, 1974: Transfer merry-go-rounds are not just a modern theme. Back in 1974 Brian Kidd left Manchester United for Arsenal, who made room for him in their squad by selling Ray Kennedy to Liverpool for £180,000. That certainly turned out to be £180,000 well spent as Kennedy helped Liverpool to five First Division medals and three European Cups.
July 15, 1989: Laurie Cunningham died far, far too early at the age of 33 but he died in the right place - Madrid. Supporters of Real had taken the 'Black Flash' to their hearts after he became the first English player to move to the Spanish giants back in 1979 - helping them to a La Liga title in his first season. Cunningham had blazed many trails, becoming the first black player to represent England at any level and the first to play in the senior side in a competitive game.
