Roche, a summer signing from Chesterfield, was finally beaten in the 56th minute when Wales international Craig Davies, back after a three-match ban, found Whitaker with a perfect cross and the midfielder shot low into the bottom left-hand corner.
Morecambe equalised nine minutes later to set up the shoot-out when Diarmuid O'Carroll broke down the right and his cross was superbly volleyed home by an unmarked Stewart Drummond.
