Saints progress after tight clash

Lallana: Impressive display

Southampton eased into the FA Cup third round with a 3-2 success at Northampton, where two goals just before the break put them in control.

Ndiaye Papa Waigo and the impressive Adam Lallana got two goals in four minutes to put Saints into a comfortable interval lead, and when Dean Hammond added a third just before the hour it looked all over.

Papa Waigo headed Saints into a 41st-minute lead and two minutes later crossed for Lallana to head home the second.

Hammond headed a third from a Morgan Schneiderlin centre in the 59th minute but six minutes later Adebayo Akinfenwa reduced the arrears with Hammond unable to keep the ball out.

Ryan Gilligan pulled another goal back in stoppage time from the penalty spot after Chris Perry was adjudged to have handled, but it came too late to alter the outcome.
