Ferguson: Surprised

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he was surprised by Rob Styles' penalty decision in the 2-0 victory over Bolton.

Manchester United were awarded a spot-kick in the 60th minute even though Jlloyd Samuel appeared to tackle Cristiano Ronaldo fairly.

Ronaldo stepped up to score and Wayne Rooney curled home a sublime second to secure all three points for United.

United had found it difficult to break down Bolton's resistance and Ferguson concedes he was grateful to have such a decision go his way.

"I was surprised. It looked to me as though the player got a foot on the ball," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"But I think Rob has turned down four or five penalty kicks for us so he still owes us four.

"It was a break for us and sometimes you need a break in these games.

"Although we were dominating the game and at times we played some fantastic football, they were just parked on the edge of their box and it was difficult to break them down."

Ferguson was satisfied with his side's display, particularly in the second half when they carved out a number of good chances.

He said: "I am pleased with the performance. In the first half we played too tightly but in the second half we spread the play better and opened them up.

"It is about being patient and playing with good speed and imagination, and at times we did that very well."

Ronaldo was the star of the show on his first league start of the season but Ferguson does not believe he is quite back to his best.

He explained: "He still has a bit to go I think. He still needs games but he is a finisher and a goalscorer."
