Brad Friedel saved a penalty on his full Aston Villa debut before Gabriel Agbonlahor salvaged a draw for the Premier League club against Reading.
The American goalkeeper made the perfect start to his Villa career in the 10th minute, following last week's transfer from Blackburn, when he dived to his right to save a Stephen Hunt spot-kick after Martin Laursen fouled Bobby Convey.
The Royals went in front 10 minutes before the break when Jem Karacan, 19, was left with a tap-in after James Harper's long-range shot was deflected on to the post.
Laursen and Ashley Young both came close for Martin O'Neill's side after the interval but they had to wait until the 79th minute to get back on terms with the Championship team.
Young winger Marc Albrighton was given acres of space and crossed for Agbonlahor who tucked the ball away neatly.
Harper almost won it in injury-time for Reading but his stabbed effort from a corner was cleared on the line by Agbonlahor.
