BREWSTER SURVIVES ARBROATH TEST

BREWSTER SURVIVES ARBROATH TEST

Brewster - very relieved.

Inverness manager Craig Brewster admitted he was a relieved man after his side survived despite a poor display against part-time Arbroath in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup.

Caley made it through 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling match at Gayfield ended 2-2 after extra-time, with goals from visiting pair Iain Vigurs and Garry Wood being cancelled out by Paul Tosh and Barry Sellars.

Tosh missed from the spot in the shoot-out with team-mate Paul Lunan's effort also blocked by Inverness goalkeeper Ryan Esson to send the SPL side through on a night where fellow top-flight side Hearts crashed out on penalties to Airdrie United.

"I'm very relieved and the best thing I can say about tonight is that we are through," said Brewster.

"Hearts went out on penalties in their game but we went through and there's a world of difference in the feeling when it goes your way.

"We played well at times but let them back into it and Arbroath deserved extra-time.

"At times we gave the ball away too cheaply and we almost paid the ultimate price for it but thankfully all four penalties in the shoot-out were superb and we're in the next round."

For Arbroath, who only gained promotion from the Third Division last term, the only thing they took from a gutsy display was pride.

Manager John McGlashan said: "That was fantastic. No matter what the outcome from the game my players can hold their heads high. They did the club proud."
