QUALITY NOT QUANTITY FOR WELL
McGhee - has high standards.
Motherwell full-back Stevie Hammell admits the club need reinforcements - but he is reassured by manager Mark McGhee's high standards.
McGhee is trying to sign Jim O'Brien and John Kennedy from Celtic while Togo international Souleymane Mamam played the second half of Wednesday night's friendly against Wolves as a trialist.
Deals for the Celtic pair - Kennedy would be a loan signing - have been held up by financial issues but Hammell knows McGhee's insistence on bringing in quality players will reap dividends.
"We are really thin, we have got young boys coming off the bench making debuts," Hammell said.
"Although they have done really well, we do need a couple of players.
"It's starting to get closer to the season, but that's one thing about the manager, he won't just bring in anybody.
"He would rather have two or three quality players rather than just fill it up with five or six players who are going to come in and just sit on the bench.
"You look at Jim O'Brien and John Kennedy, quality players.
"I have played with John a few times a few years ago with the (Scotland) Under-21s. He knows a few of the lads and he is a top-quality player, he just needs games.
"Jim has got that pace and directness that we need. If we do manage to get both of them I think they would be excellent additions."
Celtic are demanding a fee plus full payment of Kennedy's wages over the loan period, which would probably be until the end of December.
Motherwell are looking for a reduction in those terms and Norwich are waiting in the wings to meet Celtic's demands if a compromise cannot be agreed over Kennedy, who is keen to play for his local team having just become a father.
O'Brien, 20, would also command a fee having refused a new contract offer from Celtic.
Dundee United are also interested in signing the winger, who spent four months on loan at Tannadice last season.
But McGhee will step up his attempts after being impressed with O'Brien's 45-minute showing in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.
"I had a long chat with Jim and one of the things I said to him was that if he wants to play for us he needs to be disciplined," McGhee said.
"He needs to play in the position I ask him to play and he has to do certain things in certain areas.
"I explained to him what those things were and he did exactly as I asked him to do."
Mamam also played 45 minutes and showed some deft touches as he looks for a move from Royal Antwerp.
The player was signed by Manchester United as a teenager in 2003 but was immediately loaned to the Belgian side because of work permit issues.
Meanwhile, McGhee revealed Well will play Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in Germany on August 3 to prepare them for their UEFA Cup away trips.
