PURSE HOPING TO STAY WITH BLUEBIRDS

PURSE HOPING TO STAY WITH BLUEBIRDS

Purse - hopes to stay put.

Darren Purse is looking to extend his contract at Cardiff beyond the end of the season, having secured his spot at the heart of the defence.

The 31-year-old former Birmingham and West Brom defender has re-established himself at centre-back following the £3million sale of Glenn Loovens to Scottish Premier League champions Celtic.

Purse's contract at Ninian Park expires in July 2009, but he has already declared his desire to remain at the club.

"I want to stay at the football club but it's not down to me," Purse told BBC Radio Wales. "That's down to the board and the manager (and) whether they want to give me another contract.

"All I can do is just go out and play football. But if I carry on the way I've been playing in the last four games then hopefully I'll do alright for myself.

"I worked hard in pre-season to get back in the team, I've come back fitter and proved that in the games I've played this year. I've looked fit, I've looked strong and hopefully there's more to come."
